Coach's Comments: "This scrimmage was a perfect opportunity to tune up the squad for the upcoming KITT. In light of the inclement weather, we abbreviated the singles matches to pro-sets when we moved indoors, but the contests were hard-fought affairs. The Hopkins team is much improved: a young and talented group that was very capable of testing the Choate boys. I was pleased that our guys competed well at every position, even with two of our players missing from the line-up."

Back-To-Back Team Titles.
Co-captains Patrikis and Zuidema with the team trophy.
Coach's comments: "While the season is
still very young and most of our tennis remains ahead of us, the 2002 squad
already has realized a major accomplishment, having successfully defended its
team title at the KITT. For the second straight year, Choate players and doubles
teams won 16 of the 18 matches they contested over the course of the weekend.
This time around, though, we fielded six players in the tournament; last year,
we sent only our top four.
"I
was especially pleased that we took both doubles crowns, as that has been our
primary focus the past couple of weeks and it reflects the emphasis we place on
the team aspect of the sport. Our experience this weekend also revealed a few
areas in need of improvement. After a much-deserved day of rest, we'll get right
back to work, preparing to host our first dual match of the season against the
Loomis Chaffee Pelicans this Wednesday."

Coach's Comments:
"Our first dual match of the season brought Loomis Chaffee to the Choate
campus on a beautiful early spring afternoon. The Pelicans are a much-improved
team this year and gave us a good competition up and down the ladder. With Karl
Blunden out of action after the doubles (due to injury) and John Oster still on
the mend, we unexpectedly had to dip down to our #8 player in order to field six
singles competitors. This gave the visitors some opportunities in the lower half
of the singles roster and enabled them to convert a couple of points into their
win column. And the Loomis #1 played a very impressive match, handing last
weekend's KITT champ Jeremy Zuidema his first loss of the young season.
"Having the doubles
point in hand made a world of difference for the Wild Boars, however, as it
meant Loomis would need to win at least four singles matches to pull off the
upset. That proved to be an elusive task, as the swing point turned out to be #2
singles, wherein Stefan Patrikis rebounded from an 0-4 deficit in the second set
to play his best tennis of the day in a one-sided tiebreak that sealed the
Choate victory.
"All credit to the
tenacious play of this talented and young LC team for turning this year's
contest into a dramatic match. In the meantime, we'll have to raise our games as
we prepare to take on a very good Exeter team up in New Hampshire come
Saturday."

Coach's Comments:
"As was the case two years ago, a long day of travel and tennis ended as
the weary Wild Boars returned to Wallingford after 10 p.m. having been
thoroughly bested by a strong Exeter team. The Exonians were eager to avenge
their 4-3 loss to Choate in 2001 and clearly were up for this match. We competed
very well in the doubles, winning at #3 and losing narrowly in the top two
slots. Most observers expected hard-fought singles contests would follow, but
that was not to be.
"The
Choate players seemed strangely flat following the doubles; no doubt a lot of
that was due to the skilled play of the opposition. Our captains fought gamely
at the top of the roster, falling in straight sets, but pushing their opponents
all the way. We managed to take but one of the six singles points, even though
we had expected to be competitive from #3 on down. Our boys at the bottom of the
ladder simply got crushed. Kudos are in order for Karl Blunden, though: a winner
in singles and doubles today, he salvaged some pride for the visiting squad.
"Keeping
up a recent tradition, after the match we had a team dinner and then stopped by
Hampton Beach on the way home, sampling the fried dough and braving the frigid
Atlantic Ocean in this seacoast New Hampshire resort town.
"For
the third consecutive outing now we have faced scrimmage and dual match
opponents at less than full strength. It's likely Mark Goldberg's presence
today--he was away for an important family function--would have helped the Wild
Boars snare the doubles point. But even with our full line-up in place, we may
not have been able to take the necessary singles points to win this match
against Exeter. But it's academic: the better team won today.
"At
any rate, this loss will keep us motivated as we look ahead to a week with three
showdowns looming: Westminster, NMH, and Cheshire Academy."

Coach's Comments:
"Founders League rival Westminster fielded a relatively young team that was
talented enough to push us in places. The Choate boys set the right tone by winning the doubles contests
convincingly and rode that momentum through the singles play. Among the top six
matches, only #2 was up for grabs, as the Martlet player took the tiebreak
played in lieu of the third set once the home team had established an insurmountable
6-0 lead.
"Next up for us: we'll be hoping for warm weather as we take on the
Hoggers just a couple of miles south of the Vermont border."

Coach's Comments:
"Our match against Taft was a thoroughly pleasant afternoon. The rain
forced us indoors onto four relatively fast courts. The Rhinos were welcoming
hosts and offered spirited competition in an altogether friendly atmosphere. The
behavior was exemplary all around. While the Tafties
had ample athleticism at their disposal, it's fair to say that Choate fielded
the more experienced squad, as the above results suggest. There was some drama
in a tight first set at #3 singles as Mauricio Osorio and Tarik Adil slugged it
out from the baseline in some very impressive rallies. And the #6 singles match
was quite competitive: Julian Baccash saved a match point in the tiebreak with
an on-the-run forehand passing shot winner and clinched a victory two points
later.

have met the first half of the League after our encounter with T-P this

Coach's Comments: "The
Wild Boars played as though they had a plane to catch, dispatching their hosts
quite quickly on a pleasant afternoon just across the New York State border. As
if to make up for his keeping us at Taft an extra forty minutes two days before,
Julian Baccash did not drop a game in either singles or doubles--an amazing feat
for someone who forgot to bring his tennis shoes to the match! The team capped
the trip with a much-anticipated dinner at The Red Rooster drive-in on Route 22
in Brewster.
"We now head into our Spring Long Weekend halfway down
the road to a successful defense of our Founders League title. The month of May
will bring matches against the remainder of the League and our biggest rivals,
so I hope the boys return to campus refreshed and ready to step it up a notch."

Coach's Comments:
"This was a tighter match than we
expected and the best Brunswick has played against us in some years. We competed
on the Bruins' brand new courts right on the Connecticut/New York border (and
unfortunately adjacent to an airport, which meant a lot of helicopter and
airplane traffic and the unpleasant aroma of jet fuel wafting our way). Things
got off to a slow start for us, as we dropped the top two doubles contests
decisively.
"Having lost the doubles point, we needed at least four
of the top six singles in order to post a win. Jeremy Zuidema was outgunned at
#1, as a skilled young opponent exacted revenge for his loss to the Choate
co-captain a year before. At the other end of the ladder, Mark Goldberg and
Julian Baccash coasted at #5 and #6, respectively. With the team result knotted
at 2-all, the outcome hinged on the heart of the line-up: #2, #3, and #4
singles. The Wild Boars dropped first sets in all three tilts, but then rallied
to win close second sets in each one. Karl Blunden struck first blood, winning a
6-2 third set at #4. The visitors needed just one of the remaining two. Both
Stefan Patrikis and Mauricio Osorio were battling tenacious retrievers--human
backboards who put nearly every ball back in play. This put the pressure
squarely on the shoulders of our guys, as their play principally would dictate
the result of their matches one way or the other. With daylight dwindling, both
coaches agreed to convert the third set of the #3 match into a tiebreak. The
Brunswick player managed to eke out an 8-6 win in that 'breaker after some
spectacular rallies. The team score then was 3-all. All eyes turned to the #2
singles. Co-captain Patrikis built an early lead in his third set, only to see
it evaporate due to some jitters on his part and some impressive scrambling from
his opponent. The nerves were strung like piano wires on both sides of the net
(and at courtside as well) as the Bruin saved multiple match points on serve in
the 4-5 game to tie the set at 5-all. In the end, however, Stefan was just
aggressive enough to penetrate with some winners and elicit a few errors and
convert the victory on his fifth match point of the day. By the time this battle
in the gloaming was concluded, it was nearly 8 p.m.
"On the way home, the squad was treated to a
home-cooked meal at the Goldberg residence in Westport and enjoyed the feast
amidst an almost palpable feeling of relief to have nailed down the win in such
dramatic fashion. Our gratitude to the Goldbergs for their hospitality.
"Next up for the team: a trip to the Emerald City and a
much-anticipated showdown with arch-rival Deerfield this weekend."

"This was a satisfying win over our
arch-rival Deerfield. The afternoon was beautiful and our hosts offered
wonderful hospitality and fine sportsmanship. The overall atmosphere was
conducive to some impressive tennis, as Deerfield's Parents Weekend brought to
campus a knowledgeable and considerate crowd of spectators to enjoy the play.
It's been a few years since Choate defeated the Big Green in boys' varsity
tennis in a dual match so our boys were clearly 'up' for this contest. The
showdown was worthy of the rivalry, as the D.A. courts featured lots of
hard-fought matches.
"In the opening round, Choate cruised at #1 doubles but
stumbled badly in the #2 pairs, losing the final six games of the pro-set. The
critical doubles point was snared in a very tight 9-7 win for us at #3. This
swing point allowed the Wild Boars a bit more margin for error in the singles,
as we only would need three of the six tilts to clinch the win. Jeremy Zuidema
played as well as he ever has in a 6-1, 6-1 dismantling of his counterpart, a
performance in which he showcased precision serving, a groundstroke barrage, and
deft hands at net. His fellow captain Stefan Patrikis fought his way through a
close first set before coasting in the second. Though our #5 Mark Goldberg fell
to his opponent, Julian Baccash was a winner in straight sets at #6, which
enabled Choate to nail down the win. Immediately on the heels of Julian's
victory, Karl Blunden successfully completed his three-set encounter to ratchet
the team score to a 5-1 Choate advantage. Mauricio Osorio's was the last match
on court and he battled gamely, very nearly taking the second set before his
Deerfield opponent converted his tenth (!) match point in winning a thrilling
tiebreak by a 10-8 margin.
"While we are understandably pleased to have knocked
off an undefeated Deerfield squad, we can hardly afford to rest on our laurels
now. Next week will be the busiest of the season for us, as there are no fewer
than four matches on tap; fortunately, three of them are at home. If we can ride
the momentum of today's fine play into the next few outings, we'll be in good
shape come tournament time."

Coach's Comments:
"Our match with this undefeated Greens Farms
squad was a good one in most ways. We split the twelve matches we played right
down the middle, though the visitors edged us among the scoring nine. We started
play experimenting with new doubles pairs at #1 and #2. Both tandems performed
pretty solidly: Choate dominated against a strong #1 team from GFA and, other
than getting broken in the first game of the pro-set, our #2s played evenly with
their opponents all the way through. Elsewhere, our #3 combination of Baccash
and Osorio cruised as expected."
"We fought hard in the singles, but came up a match
short of what we needed for the victory. The Greens Farms boys are as deep and
talented a lot as we've seen this season and played some very fine singles
matches. Stefan Patrikis and Julian Baccash posted straight set wins for the
home team at #2 and #6, respectively. Jeremy Zuidema lost a battle at #1 to a
strong opponent. Karl Blunden dropped a singles match for only the second time
this season, playing without his usual focus and patience. Mark Goldberg was
dominated by a player who reported after the match that it was the best he had
ever played. The swing point likely would have been at #3 singles, wherein we
experienced a bit of bad luck as Mauricio turned an ankle right at the beginning
of the match; he struggled through one set, hopping around on one foot much of
the time, but the demands of his baseline game and the steadiness of his
opponent were such that he was forced to retire due to injury. Them's the
breaks!

Coach's Comments:
"The boys chalked up another League
victory--their 20th consecutive--in dispatching Kent on a beautiful early May
afternoon. The setting was perfect: red clay courts against a backdrop of green
lawns and tree-covered mountains. The Kent folks were wonderful hosts, making
our visit enjoyable in every way. The Choate players are equally comfortable on
slow clay courts and fast indoor surfaces, and we made the most of our sole
outing this season on the dirt.
"We have another League match on Friday, when we
host Kingswood-Oxford, and then will see Andover here on Saturday."

Coach's Comments:
"Nearing the end of a long week--one
with four matches--the boys' bones are a bit weary, but we executed well enough
to post a convincing win against a young Wyverns team. Choate dominated the
doubles play, establishing critical momentum heading into the singles
competition. Our new teams at the #1 and #2 positions have gelled nicely.
"At the top of the singles ladder, both of our
co-captains were clearly off form today, but their opponents played very well in
snaring two points for the visiting squad. At #1, K-O's David Marshall was
particularly effective, avenging his early-season loss to Jeremy Zuidema in the
KITT final. Fortunately for Choate, the rest of the matches all fell our way in straight sets."

Coach's Comments:
"Though Phillips Academy arrived at the
Hunt Tennis Center with a modest 5-5 prep school record in hand, we knew this
team would be scrappy and hungry for a victory. Sure enough, the visitors were
tenacious, particularly in the singles play. They also were a classy group,
distinguishing themselves by flawless comportment as well as fine play. (I
should note that the Andover varsity was the first tennis team I coached and a
squad I am always pleased to see do well--except, of course, when Choate is on
the other side of the net!)
"In retrospect, the Wild Boars' clean sweep of the
doubles turned out to be valuable indeed, as Choate and Andover split the
singles contests between them. (Our realignment of the top two pairs a week ago
has proved to be a smart move in keeping our doubles play sharp.) The highlight of
the day was a spectacular rally at match point in the #1 doubles, wherein both
teams repeatedly were forced from the net by a series of effective lobs before
Messrs. Goldberg and Zuidema finally punctuated the point with a putaway smash
to win the pro-set, 9-7.
"The P.A. squad took the #1 and #2 singles in a pair of
hard-fought matches and also grabbed a point at #6, wherein Julian Baccash's
patience was on walkabout today. But the home team proved to be too strong in
the heart of the ladder. Though they were pushed hard, Mauricio Osorio and Karl
Blunden posted straight-set wins and Mark Goldberg overcame a sluggish start to
dominate the final two sets of his match and--for the second year in a
row--break a 3-all tie in the Andover/Choate team scoring in our favor. It was
an enjoyable team match on another beautiful day: great tennis played in the
spirit of friendly competition--just the sort of contest a coach hopes for at
this point in the season."

Coach's Comments:
"Our match with
Hotchkiss proved to be competitive, as expected. Even in years when one team is
clearly stronger than the other, these Choate/Hotchkiss showdowns nearly always
develop into hard-fought affairs. No other school has ever claimed the League
championship in boys' tennis, so it's not hard for us to summon motivation for
this opponent.
"The doubles and the top three singles matches were
moved indoors in order to avoid the gusts of wind blowing balls all over the
court. We started the way we had hoped to, with a clean sweep of the doubles.
The singles points were up for grabs, however: Hotchkiss won at #3 and #6, but
straight-set wins for Choate at #1, #4, and #5 nailed down the team victory.
(The #2 singles was abandoned at the beginning of the third set once we
clinched.) The varsity win was matched by successful efforts by Choate's JV and
thirds teams, completing a clean sweep of Hotchkiss in boys' tennis.
"While
understandably pleased to have won our League championship, we now must turn our
focus to the New England team tournament this weekend. While questions of
seeding and the draws aren't yet resolved, we do know we will be playing at home
on Saturday. The field will consist of the eight Class 'A' teams with the
strongest records this season, so the competition is guaranteed to be be tough.
We've stumbled in the opening round of this event the last three years, so we
will be eager to get that monkey off our backs and see how far we can advance
against the best teams in New England. Win or lose, it should be fun!"

Coach's Comments:
"Scheduled
to play Hotchkiss for the second time in four days, we were a little nervous
that this solid team from Lakeville would be fired up to avenge its loss at our
hands on Wednesday. It's often a tall order to play such a team right after we
beat them. And in the three years since the Team Championships event was
created, we had yet to prove that we could get past the opening round of the
tournament, having lost 4-3 heartbreakers each time. The forecast of showers
through the early part of the day meant we would compete indoors on the three
fast courts of our Johnson Athletic Center.
"Happily for us, Choate never let the Bearcats in the
match, winning all three doubles in commanding fashion and securing the first
three singles matches played in straight sets. It was especially gratifying to
see Stefan Patrikis and Mauricio Osorio dismantle opponents who had given them
so much trouble earlier in the week. This was one of the toughest performances
of our season and we'll hope to replicate it this afternoon against either
Cheshire or Milton, whose quarterfinal match is scheduled to follow ours here at
Choate."

Coach's Comments: "We anticipated Milton would field the stronger players in the top half of the singles ladder, but we liked our chances in the bottom half. Assuming we could split the singles points down the middle, capturing the doubles point would be the key to the victory. As expected, Milton's top players were too tough at #1 doubles and Choate overwhelmed the Mustangs' pair at #3. Unfortunately, the swing #2 doubles escaped our grasp, as our boys went down by the margin of only one service break. Since the rules dictate we must play singles from the top down when there are fewer than six courts, we were outgunned at #1, #2, and #3 singles and dropped those matches in straight sets. Milton thus locked up the win, making what would likely have been a close match look like a blowout."

"A
gorgeous spring day was a fitting backdrop for our final match of the regular
season. We made the most of it, dispatching the Avon Old Farms team quickly. Our
strong doubles play once again set the tone for the afternoon. Other than a loss

convincing wins up and down the roster.

Coach's Comments:
"The Wild Boars
finished their 2002 campaign in style, dominating the doubles competition in
the New England Prep School Invitational. Top seeds Stefan Patrikis and Jeremy
Zuidema crafted a nice pair of bookends to their season in winning both the
Kingswood-Oxford Invitational #1 doubles draw at the beginning of the spring
and the New England doubles crown this weekend. The senior co-captains defeated
their own teammates, Karl Blunden '04 and Mark Goldberg '03, in the final.
After beating an Andover tandem in the first round, the Choate underclassmen
upended the second-seeded team from Salisbury in the second round by a 10-7
margin, rebounding from a 1-5 deficit in the process. The road to an all-Choate
doubles final went straight through Concord, New Hampshire, as both Wild Boars
pairs had to defeat duos from a strong St. Paul's squad in the semifinal round:
the Patrikis/Zuidema combination handled third seeds Kevin Child and William
Evart, 6-2, 6-0, in the top half of the draw, while Blunden and Goldberg had a
tougher time with Russell Cory and Adrian Gaty, eventually winning 6-3, 6-4.
The Choate sixth formers--in fine form throughout the event--were too tough in
the championship round, posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
"This was a wonderful outing for the Blue and Gold.
Jeremy and Stefan have contributed so much to Choate Tennis the past few years
and this win was a terrific cap to two fine careers. It was fitting that they
won together. And Mark and Karl gained some valuable experience competing under
tournament conditions, as did Maurico Osorio, who played in the singles draw. I
am particularly proud that our squad distinguished itself by its doubles play,
as that has been an important focal point for our program this season.
"We topped off a perfect day of tennis with a hearty
feast at the Patrikis residence and are grateful for the tremendous
hospitality."
