Kingswood-Oxford Invitational Tennis Tournament | West Hartford, CT | 9:00 | Choate finished 4th of 8 teams.
Coach's comments: "The team did awfully well over the weekend, especially considering the absence of Brian Holland '99, who was the top seed in the #3 singles flight and would have partnered McJunkin in #1 doubles had he not withdrawn Friday night due to an ear infection. We use the KITT as a scrimmage to check out our major rivals for the season, and it looks as though we will be competitive with all of these teams in 1997." |

Balakrishna/Kriegel--61 26 75 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell d. Bender/Wand--64 63 Coach's comments: "It's nice to win the first match of the season in such convincing fashion. The conditions certainly weren't easy out there, but the Choate players seemed to handle the gusty wind and the cold pretty well." |
4/11/97 | Horace Mann School | home | 2:30 | 7 | 2 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) l. to B. Weiskopf, 06 63 46 #2 singles: Brian Holland '99 d. N. Topjian, 62 16 63 #3 singles: John Meadow '98 d. J. Balik-Klein, 64 57 63 #4 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. A. Royce, 67 (5) 62 76 (6) #5 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. E. Fabrikant, 63 61 #6 singles: Tejas Parikh '97 d. D. Katz, 76 (7) 62 (doubles matches abbreviated to 8-game pro sets) #2 doubles: Meadow/Powell l. to Balik-Klein/Royce, 68 #3 doubles: Karush/Parikh d. Katz/Player, 84 Coach's comments: "In light of the absence of Sean Kellman '98--our #1 singles and #2 doubles player--I was impressed by the play of the Wild Boars against this traditionally strong team. Even though we clinched the victory by winning five of the six singles matches, most of those were decided in three sets. There were some dramatic moments, especially in the #4 singles match; Powell and his opponent each saved a number of match points before the Choate player eked out the third set tiebreaker 8-6, which sealed Choate's win." |
4/12/97 | Lawrenceville School | home | 2:00 | 7 | 2 | This match was played entirely on the Rosenthal Courts
inside the Johnson Athletic Center due to inclement weather.
Individual match results: #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) d. N. Horowitz--62 61 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 d. B. Lester--16 61 75 #4 singles: John Meadow '98 l. to H. Swenson--36 36 #5 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. E. Bedestani--67 (4) 76 (7) 61 #6 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. Roger Pine--62 60 #1 doubles: Holland/McJunkin d. Horowitz/Slapp--76 (4) #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman d. Lester/S. Lord--36 61 75 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell d. R. Ozols/J. Willig--62 63 Coach's comments: "I was especially pleased that our captain, Jonathan McJunkin, won his singles match so handily, since he lost a tough three-setter to the same player last weekend at the Kingswood-Oxford tournament. For the second time in as many days, Josef Powell saved match points to prevail in three sets, too. Having a 4-2 lead after the singles gave us a bit of a cushion heading into the the doubles and the #3 doubles team's win clinched our first victory over Lawrenceville since 1994." |
4/14/97 | Westminster School | home | 4:00 | 5 | 4 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 d. P. Vimolvanich--75 57 75 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) l. to W. Crawford--26 16 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 l. to C. Watson--36 16 #4 singles: John Meadow '98 l. to R. Finlayson--57 63 46 #5 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. R. Sulentic--60 63 #6 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. J. Boynton--62 61 (doubles shortened to 8-game pro-set due to impending
darkness) #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman l. to Finlayson/Watson--48 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell d. Sulentic/A. Watson--84 Coach's comments: "It was miraculous that we headed into the doubles even at three points. Sean Kellman played one of the gutsiest matches in memory, coming back from 3-5 down in the third set and saving three match points against a very tough #1 singles opponent to give the Wild Boars a better position going into the doubles. And we needed it, too, for things looked pretty grim as the last gasps of sunlight were disappearing in the west. Although we wrapped up #3 doubles early, it was soon clear that #2 doubles was going to go the Martlets' way and our #1 team was down 1-6 in the pro-set before they knew what hit them. To the credit of Holland and McJunkin, our #1 pair roared back to 5-7, and then, in the gloaming, braved two no-ad deuce points with the match on the line to even things at 8 games apiece and earn the chance to play a tiebreaker. Choate dominated the 'breaker, finally winning it 7-5, playing very nearly in the dark! The Choate team displayed tremendous courage in virtually stealing this win from a very good opponent. We were simply tougher in the clutch." |
4/16/97 | Northfield Mount Hermon School | home | 2:45 | 6 | 3 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 d. A. Stokes--64 64 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) d. Ronaldo Kentjana--57 61 64 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 l. to Raemon Kentjana--26 06 #4 singles: John Meadow '98 d. R. Fayez--57 61 75 #5 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. K. Togawa--61 62 #6 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. V. Kapur--63 62 #1 doubles: Holland/McJunkin l. to Ronaldo Kentjana/Stokes--36 26 #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman d. A. Schaber '98/Togawa--63 64 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell l. to Fayez/Raemon Kentjana--60 36 36 Coach's comments: "Winning five of the singles matches today clinched the Wild Boar victory, and I think we then got a bit sloppy in the doubles since the pressure was off. NMH played a tough match against us, to their credit. It was hardly an easy day at the office for the Choate team. We've come through a stretch of five matches in eight days and the guys are tired and looking forward to the chance to regroup a bit and to work on some areas of their games. Having Saturday as an off day will give us a chance to do just that in the next week." |
4/23/97 | Trinity-Pawling School | home | 3:00 | 9 | 0 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 d. B. Ketchum--61 61 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) d. A. Papadopoulos--60 61 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 d. M. Kuno--75 61 #4 singles: John Meadow '98 d. T. Bosch--36 62 64 #5 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. H. Silvera--57 60 63 #6 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. S. Anderson--62 60 #7 singles: Tejas Parikh '97 d. A. Corvin--61 60 (unofficial match) (#2 and #3 doubles shortened to 8-game pro-sets) #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman d. Bosch/Papadopoulos--80 #3 doubles: Parikh/Powell d. Anderson/Silvera--83 Coach's comments: "Aside from the three-set matches at #4 and #5 singles, we coasted to this win without much resistance. We now head into the toughest part of the season following Long Weekend, with Brunswick and Deerfield waiting for us next week and then a stretch with four opponents (Kent, Kingswood, Andover, and Taft) in six days the week after, so right now is a good time to work on some things and prepare for what I'm sure will tough matches ahead." |
4/30/97 | Brunswick School | home | 4:00 | 1 | 8 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 l. to M. Schlappig--16 26 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) l. to G. Turner--16 36 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 l. to B. Stewart--62 06 26 #4 singles: Josef Powell '98 l. to V. Perna--16 64 36 #5 singles: John Meadow '98 d. S. Sill--62 46 75 #6 singles: Tejas Parikh '97 l. to N. Papanicalou--26 36 #7 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. P. Coffin--63 64 (unofficial match) (doubles shortened to one-set matches once Brunswick
clinched the victory) #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman l. to Papanicalou/Schlappig--26 #3 doubles: Parikh/Powell l. to Coffin/Perna--46 Coach's comments: "We were pretty flat today. I had figured we'd have difficulty up at the top of the singles ladder, but we collapsed right down the line, with the notable exceptions of Meadow and Karush. Once Josef Powell--who had not yet lost a singles match this season--went down in three sets, I knew we were in deep trouble. Even after Brunswick clinched the win in the singles, I had hoped we could pull out all three doubles for a 4-5 loss, but we didn't put our best feet forward there either. In spite of the lopsided score, I think this was a match we could have won, so it's very frustrating for me and the team. We hope to get back on track against Deerfield on Saturday." |
5/19/97 | Deerfield Academy | home | 3:30 | Match cancelled due to inclement weather.
5/7/97 | Kent School | home | 3:15 | 5 | 4 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 l. to A. MacDonald--16 64 16 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) l. to R. Alejos--06 26 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 d. P. Davis--62 60 #4 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. J. Wilkens--63 62 #5 singles: John Meadow '98 l. to S. Park--62 46 16 #6 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. C. Leibfarth--62 61 #1 doubles: Holland/McJunkin l. to Alejos/MacDonald--57 36 #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman d. Davis/Wilkens--64 64 #3 doubles: Parikh/Powell d. J. Anderson/L. Field--62 60 Coach's comments: "I do worry when we split the singles 3-3 because it reduces our comfort margin in the doubles, but usually Choate can count on winning at least two of the doubles matches, and that's what pulled us through today. Although our #1 pairing was a bit off form, the #2 and #3 teams coasted to victory, preserving our undefeated status in league matches." |
5/9/97 | Kingswood-Oxford School | West Hartford, CT | 4:15 | 1 | 8 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 l. to D. Wellner--36 57 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) l. to M. Dougherty--46 36 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 l. to M. Krenicky--16 57 #4 singles: Josef Powell '98 l. to J. Granato--46 36 #5 singles: John Meadow '98 l. to J. Rosen--06 76 (5) 57 #6 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. D. Drady--60 61 #7 singles: Tejas Parikh '97 d. B. Rosen--75 63 (unofficial match) (doubles shortened to one-set matches once K-Oclinched
the victory) #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman l. to J. Rosen/Wellner--06 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell l. to K. Dougherty/Granato--06 Coach's comments: "No excuses today. We just got thoroughly outplayed. On paper, it figured to be a close match, but the match wasn't played on paper. K-O played really well and we failed to execute in the singles competition. The #1 doubles was a great match-up; it was hard luck we didn't come home with that one." |
5/10/97 | Phillips Academy | Andover, MA | 3:30 | Match cancelled due to inclement weather.
5/12/97 | Taft School | home | 4:00 | 6 | 3 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 l. to K. Fitzpatrick--67 (11) 36 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) d. C. Spalding--64 61 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 d. T. Green--76 (5) 64 #4 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. M. Bastien--60 75 #5 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. E. Necarsulmer--64 63 #6 singles: John Meadow '98 d. V. Paruchuri-576 61 60 #7 singles: Tejas Parikh '97 d. S. Taylor--60 61 (unofficial match) #8 singles: Mike Ranieri '98 d. D. Kuschell--61 41 ret (unofficial match) (doubles shortened to one-set matches once Choate clinched
the victory) #2 doubles: Karush/Parikh l. to Spalding/Taylor--36 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell l. to Kuschell/Paruchuri--57 Coach's comments: "We clinched this one in the singles, which was a pleasant surprise. We were geared up for a tough match against Taft, but things fell our way somehat nicely in the first round of matches, as we posted an insurmountable 5-1 lead. I wish I could say the doubles was the icing on the cake, but I fear we got somewhat sloppy in the #2 and #3 matches with the contest in hand. This win keeps us in contention for the Founders League title, so onward against Hotchkiss on Wednesday!" |
5/14/97 | Hotchkiss School | home | 3:00 | 6 | 3 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 d. B. James--63 64 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) d. I. Snitbahn--64 62 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 l. to N. Holt--63 36 57 #4 singles: Josef Powell '98 l. to R. Wainwright--46 26 #5 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. W. Van Ness--62 63 #6 singles: John Meadow '98 d. W. Gilpin--60 61 #1 doubles: Holland/McJunkin d. Holt/James--62 62 #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman l. to Snitnahn/Wainwright--46 57 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell d. Gilpin/Van Ness--75 36 10 (6) (third set in #3 doubles played as a tiebreaker since the outcome of the match had been decided) Coach's comments: "Hotchkiss has been our strongest rival in the past fifteen years, and even though they lost their best players to graduation last spring, this win was sweet. Not everyone was on top of his game today, but we played well enough to get the job done. The guys are looking forward to the New England tournament at home this Saturday." |
5/17/97 | New England Prep School Invitational Tennis Tournament | home | 9:00 | The Wild Boars finished 8th of 16 teams in this event. Choate's "B" Doubles entry of John Meadow '98 and Josef Powell '98 finished 3rd in their division.
5/21/97 | Avon Old Farms School | Avon, CT | 2:30 | 6 | 3 | Individual match results: #1 singles: Sean Kellman '98 l. to E. Stone--16 16 #2 singles: Jonathan McJunkin '97 (C) l. to E. Borger--67 (3) 16 #3 singles: Brian Holland '99 d. H. Tabackman--61 06 64 #4 singles: Josef Powell '98 d. S. Fidler--61 62 #5 singles: Justin Karush '99 d. J. Simon--62 63 #6 singles: John Meadow '98 d. C. Rosenberg--61 62 #1 doubles: Holland/McJunkin l. to J. D'Entrement/Stone--36 46 #2 doubles: Karush/Kellman d. Borger/Fidler--83 #3 doubles: Meadow/Powell d. Rosenberg/Tabackman--62 62 Coach's comments: "Our win today clinched the Founders League title for the 1997 season. It was clear our depth enabled us to prevail against the Winged Beavers. This was a satisfying finish to our season." |
